CESM Tutorial 2018

The deadline to apply was Friday, 16 March 2018. Accepted students were informed by 18 May 2018.
The application is closed. If you missed the deadline, we hope you will apply to our 2019 CESM tutorial.
This year's CESM Tutorial will consist of:
- Lectures on simulating the climate system
- Practical sessions on running CESM, modifying components, and analyzing data
We receive some funding each year to support this tutorial. You will have the opportunity to request funding when you apply. Funding typically is lodging, per diem, and ground transportation. We have not yet received confirmation from our funding sources, so what we are able to offer may change. We do not have funds to support air travel. You may also attend with your own funds. Whether or not you apply for travel funds has no bearing on the selection process.
Acceptance criteria
- Preference given to early career graduate students, though we will aim for a mix of graduate students, postdocs, early career research scientists, and faculty.
- Project descriptions that fit with broader CESM goals and activities
- Balance attendees across institutions

Related Workshop
This year there will be a workshop held the week immediately following the CESM Tutorial. This workshop will be separate from the CESM Tutorial and the application process will be handled separately. We encourage you to apply to this workshop if it is relevant to your research.
2018 CESM Polar Modeling Workshop

Prerequisites
Please complete the following activities to ensure you are prepared for the tutorial. Suggested activities include completion of a Unix and a Fortran lessons.
Unix tutorial
Description: This module, from The COMET Program, will help those new to computing in the geosciences become familiar with working in a command line environment. You can learn about the basics of Unix file structures, how to navigate in a Unix environment, and you'll get to practice creating, storing and searching for files.
The expected length is 15-30 minutes for users with some Unix experience, and 30-60 minutes for novices.

Introduction to Programming & Fortran Lesson
Lesson Description: This 2-unit module from The COMET Program introduces users to scientific programming structures and methods and the history, basic syntax and functionality of Fortran, which makes up much of CESM.
Recommendations for Module Use:
- Users who have little to no programming experience should take both units in full
- Users that do have some programming experience, such as a web-based language like HTML, but have limited experience in scientific programming, such as a C-based languages, should start with unit 1 and may find they can complete it quickly. While unit 2, covering Fortran and CESM Fortran examples, should be taken in full
- Users that have significant scientific programming experience (C-based languages, for example) can safely start in unit 2, which covers Fortran and CESM Fortran examples
- Users that have significant programming experience in Fortran can likely begin at the "Fortran and CESM" subsection (near bottom of table of contents) in unit 2

One-time registration/enrollement
To gain access to your daily quiz, you need to create an account on the MetEd website and to enroll in "2018cesm_tutorial". This is a one-time painless process.
- Go to https://www.meted.ucar.edu
- If you don't have an existing account on to the MetEd website
- Click “Create an account” located below the “Sign In” button.
- Provide all required information and then click “submit” at the bottom of the page.
- If you have an existing account on to the MetEd website,
- Log on to the MetEd website.
- Go to https://courses.comet.ucar.edu/course/view.php?id=210
- Scroll to the bottom of the Enrollment options page. Enter the enrollment key "2018cesm_tutorial" (without quotes), then click the enroll button.
- You should see the CESM Tutorial: Daily Quiz welcome message, and you will receive an email to confirm your enrollment.
Daily quizzes
Once you have enrolled, follow the "Quiz Link" below to access your daily quiz.

Feel free to take the quiz anytime during the lab session or even after the lab session. For instance, you can take the quiz while you are waiting for the model to compile or your run to complete. However, please refrain to take the quiz before your daily lab session. We might need to modify the quiz just before the lab session, and we would need to erase your attempts.
The goal of the quizzes is to challenge your knowledge and to create a learning experience. You can take the quiz as many times as you want. During the quiz: Feel to talk to your neighbor, to ask questions to your instructor, to look into the documentation.
